Shaq still doubling-down on not needing coaches. Its very telling and a classic example of how ego can get in the way of critical-thinking.

    • onezero

phil once said kobe was uncoachable, here I think Shaq proved he was the bigger problem.

    • jeremy roberts
jeremy roberts 4 miesięcy temu +50

Shaq is just only thinking about it from his own perspective. He was always bigger and stronger than everyone else so he never needed to worry about X’s and O’s or what the coach was saying. That’s why his answer to everything is just “oh you just gotta pound the ball down low to the big guys and you win” he never needed to think too much to be successful

@onezero Shaq is coachable, what he was trying to say is since he is a superstar and he's the face of the team he is also more responsible and have some sense of urgency

Shaq basketball IQ sometimes is on a dunce level. It's like he can't critically think about the question and give an intelligent basketball answer. His perspective is very limited, much like his vocabulary! I leave the REAL basketball analysis to Chuck, Kenny, and EJ!!!

Charles is 100% right. Shaq talks about himself a lot and HE didn't need coaches. But what about Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Marcus Smart etc..
They ain't remotely Shaq and they DO need coaching. Even Jayson Tatum is going to need a good coach for his development

    • MrGenexxx

Shaq also needed coaching 😂 he’s just so full of himself

    • LazyCrazyGuy
      LazyCrazyGuy 4 miesięcy temu +3

@MrGenexxxShaq didn't need a coach. The guy played bully ball and could just dunk over everyone. When he was with the Magic and he left to sign with Lakers. His stats didn't change much clearly showing coaching did nothing for him. The guy didn't have footwork or a good midrange. What can a coach teach him about dunking? Nothing, that's what. Phil Jackson was there for Kobe and crew. Kobe developed under Phil Jackson and he improved. Shaq did not, he just learned how to run the triangle offense but he was still a poor free throw shooter and he didn't acquire footwork or mid range game.

    • Hunyango
      Hunyango 4 miesięcy temu +4

@LazyCrazyGuy you have no idea how hard the triangle offense really is to implement, if it was that easy then why doesn't much teams do it succesfuly at the time. It's because a good coach that can implement it to his team is rare and shaq actually does play perfectly with the system despite being a freak nature by himself. You should watch the clip where rodman shows on the court how phil applied the triangle to them and I really doubt And back then it is not the head coach's main responsibility to make a player a better free throw shooter and acquire footwork or whatever betetr stats you had in mind, It's all about the system and defense. What you are referring to is a personal coach not a headcoach🤣

ime Udoku's tough presence on the sidelines was a big part of the celtics identity and that toughness seemed missing all season. Also, Mazzulla's robotic, distant interviews don't do a lot to show he really has a handle on the team.

I really don't see how Joe Mazzula can be blamed so much when Tatum, Brown, Smart and Horford have had 3 Coaches now to get them to this exact stage of the playoffs multiple times. Brad Stevens who basically did most of the development and laid the foundations, Ime Udoka who took them the next level and finally got them to the Finals and now Joe Mazzula. The fact is the Celtics generally speaking always seem to do poorly after having great seasons as soon the expectations and pressure come the following season. It literally been a meme worthy running theme for the last 6-7 years. He definitely deserves some blame but those 4 have been in the League long enough and reached this stage more than enough times to know how to get through it and just turn up.

    • Semaj spivey

Thank you instead of blaming coaching what about player accountability yeah he didn’t coach his best but Tatum brown smart old man should play a lot better the C give them this series.

      onezero 4 miesięcy temu +16

@Semaj spivey coach Mazzula is a rookie coach and it really showed. Chuck is 100% right, they just jack up 3 whether open or not, and that is the biggest factor for the Celts, they can only have themselves to blame, the players and the coach.

I think they need a championship player like a Kawhi Leonard or a Steph Curry type of player who has the experience and doesn't succumb to playoff pressure. BOS needs to trade Brown and get rid of Horford. They should build around Tatum their best offensive player and Smart their best defensive player. They need to get better shooting, a big that can score in the paint sometimes and a better head coach. Joe Mazzula is another Mike D'Antoni. No playbook offensively other than jack up threes all night.

Nope. The Celtics just consistently do poorly after having great seasons as soon the expectations and pressure rise for the last 6-7 seasons. People are saying it's not the coaches fault.
Let me clear something up. I am definitely not a believer in Tatum anymore but the Celtics have been playing the exact same system they were playing under Brad Stevens. It is a 5 player 1 on 1, this team does not slice and cut. They don't scramble and they don't play as a cohesive unit. They literally play iso ball and take turns doing it. That is not a winning formula for a championship. The truth is Brad Stevens is the GM which means he has input on how the team plays. They are playing exactly how they played when he was coaching. You have regular season coaches (Mike D'Antoni, Mike Budenholzer, Brad Stevens, etc. and then you have championship coaches (Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr, etc.)
Joe Mazulla ignorantly responded that the amount of threes the Boston Celtics chucked up was not a problem. I can tell you it's a problem and it's why they lost. Live and die by the three. You should be looking to get high percentage shots and if a man opens up then pass out for a three. But don't walk up to the line and shoot a contested three after you've missed your first 12 attempts. That is the sign of a coach who will make very little use of the talent he was handed. Just like Doc Rivers under delivered with the Boston Celtics Big 4 because Rondo was a huge part of that offense (disrespectful to him to only say Big 3). Mike Budenholzer also under delivered with the Bucks and Brad Stevens under delivered along with subsequent coaches Ime Ukoda was the best coach Boston had but........I agree Tatum and company failed but the coach is the navigator. He failed to make a correct plan and Brad Stevens failed to get someone who could navigate them the right way. Not his way because his way has been a consistent failure.

The coach has nothing to do with your best player getting ZERO buckets in 4th quarter... Tatum was consistently quiet in crunch time. He got carried to the ECF and decided not to show up letting his team go down 3 games in a row.

Why is this even a conversation. Its silly. It was his first year as a head coach and he got them to the Eastern Conference Finals. They lost 4-3 so it went seven games to a Heat team that is really good and made the Eastern Conference Finals last season I believe. People are so quick to fire a coach and get a new one. Give him a few years. Its not all his fault for them losing. Tatum is not consistent and Brown is the same way. The players didn't play well enough. The coach can draw up the best scheme in the NBA but if the players don't go out there and execute or make shots or defend then that is not the coach fault. Defense is effort. Effort from the players. The coach can't make players play defense. He can come up with strategies to help but its up to the players to buy in and give effort and execute. The coach cant make players make shots. He can only put them in the best positions to score. Its up to the players to put the ball in the basket. The coach can not keep players from turning the ball over. The players have to be better at handling the ball and having better ball security. Too many coaches in the NBA get blamed for a team losing or not making the finals. Its not always the coaches. They fire one coach, get another and then fire that coach in 2 years, and then get another. The cycle repeats itself for some or most of these teams in the NBA.

It's way too soon to fire Mazzulla. First of all, tell me the last time that changing out coaches four times in four years worked out well for a team. Multiple, rapid changes in the HC position undermine continuity and player buy-in. Why would players buy into a new system when they think the guy is probably only going to be there for one year? Secondly, I'll go back to the fact that firing Udoke was one of the dumbest moves the Celtics have ever made. That type of stuff happens frequently in professional sports, the Celtics overreacted, then bungled the whole situation further by turning it into a media circus. It was also obvious that many of the players did not agree and were not informed by the franchise, which further undermined the team. To be honest, getting to the ECF this year was surprising given how badly the Celtics managed the offseason.
Also, Celtics fans seem to ignore (or simply be ignorant) the fact that, compared to Udoke and Stevens, Mazzulla had an incredibly thin roster of assistant coaches. The Celtics (for other inexplicable reasons) let go of a veteran like Will Hardy and Stoudamire left us before the playoffs, creating a mid-season coaching void. That took away the two top assistants and the head coach. Blaming a first year Head Coach who lost his top assistant right before the playoffs is just ridiculous. Mazzulla and the team need another year to see if they can figure it out together.

    • Boston 617
      Boston 617 4 miesięcy temu

Lacking assistants doesn't excuse his lack of calling timeouts and lack of adjustments. The team doesn't have time for Joe to learn, that will take years. He needs to go if they are serious about winning. If not, I hope Tatum leaves, he deserves to go to a team that is serious and doesn't have cheap ownership.

Any decent management in the NBA - IE: Not many. Give a coach another season to redeem themselves after a failure/disappointment of a season. If they don't redeem themselves the next season, then ok to fire them.

Mazzula was in way over his head, drowning for the entire playoffs. Terrible with timeouts, with rotations, and made absolutely zero adjustments. The Celtics played with no ball movement, no players moving without the ball, and a strategy of hero ball; either jacking ridiculous 3s or iso dribbling into the teeth of the defense. The brass didn't do him any favors by not getting him a competent, experienced staff, but at the end of the day, the moment was far too big for Joe.

@G Manu jaylen has a much better shot selection and doesn’t force his shot like tatum. And Brown is much stronger. Tatum is only considered better because he makes more highlight plays and is easier to promote.
And did you not just see klay embarrass himself with an awful season where he’s taking more and more difficult shots he can’t make. I will say, klay is trying to be a more all around scorer but he’s just not that guy. And when you didn’t play 3 yrs in a row he’ll probably never be the same. And everybody just gushes over his spectacular past and his very meh present

He really handicapped this teams potential this year with the way he played.
